Keeping your Quantara accounts safe

Simple, opinionated practices for protecting your keys on Devnet-0, public testnet, and mainnet.

Quantara treats key security as non-negotiable. Even though Devnet-0 and public testnet use test-only QTR, they are rehearsals for how you will operate on mainnet.

All networks share the same address format: QTR • 12 decimals • SS58 73. If someone controls your keys, they control your accounts everywhere.

This page gives a practical checklist – no fear-mongering, just habits that make it much harder to lose funds or be phished when mainnet goes live.

Quick rules of thumb

• Never type your seed phrase into any website.
• Keep separate keys for devnet, testnet, and mainnet.
• Use hardware wallets for serious value, even on testnet.
• Treat validator keys like production secrets from day one.

1. Separate environments

Use different accounts for Devnet-0, testnet, and mainnet

Reusing the same keys everywhere makes mistakes permanent. Separation gives you safe blast-radius by default.

• Use different accounts for public testnet experiments.
• Reserve fresh, never-used seed phrases for mainnet.

Operator, hot, and cold keys

• Keep a low-balance “daily driver” wallet for testing.
• Use separate, higher-security accounts for staking or validator roles.
• Never run validators or large balances from a casual browser extension on an untrusted machine.

2. Seeds & devices

Handle your seed phrase like a master key

If you lose your seed, you lose the account. If someone copies it, they own the account.

Seed basics

Write once, store offline

• Write seeds on paper or metal, not in screenshots.
• Do not store seeds in email, cloud notes, or chats.
• Keep at least two copies in separate, safe physical locations.
• Never share photos of your recovery phrase.

Devices

Prefer hardware wallets where possible

• For real value (mainnet), use hardware wallets or dedicated machines.
• Keep OS and browser extensions up to date; avoid random browser plugins.
• Lock your device with a strong password and enable disk encryption.

3. Phishing

Be picky about what you sign

Most attacks don’t break cryptography — they trick people into signing something dangerous.

Before you sign

Checklist for transactions

• Confirm the website URL is correct (no typos or clones).
• Read the transaction details: type, destination address, and amounts.
• If a dApp asks you to grant broad “infinite” approvals, pause and review.
• Don't rush transactions from DMs, “support” chats, or random links.

Red flags

Common scam patterns

• “Support” asking for your seed phrase or screenshots.
• Fake airdrops or giveaways requiring a login with seed.
• Sites that look like Quantara but use odd domains or broken English.
• Urgent countdowns or threats like “your funds will be lost in 5 minutes.”

Quantara team members will never ask for your seed phrase, full private key, or direct remote access to your machine.

4. If something goes wrong

Incident response playbook

React fast, stay calm, and treat every incident as a lesson before mainnet.

Lost or compromised device

Move first, investigate second

• Assume the device is compromised.
• From a clean device, move funds to a new wallet with a fresh seed.
• Revoke approvals / permissions from any connected dApps where possible.
• Rotate passwords and enable 2FA on email, exchanges, and password managers.

Where to get help

Use official channels only

• Report suspicious activity in the official Discord.
• Share transaction hashes and addresses, never your seed or private keys.
• Keep notes on what happened so you can harden your setup for next time.
